Job Title: Senior Principal Robotics Hardware Architect
Proposed Grade: Senior Principal/ P6
Primary Location: Wilmington, MA
The Robotics Focus Applications (RFAS) Team are hiring a senior Robotics expert, located in the Wilmington Office, MA, USA. The RFAS team is responsible for expansion of ADI revenue globally in the areas of mounted robots, mobile robots, and humanoids. This role will be an integral part of the global robotics team but will also work closely with the robotics teams located in Wilmington including those in the broader RFAS Team, as well as those in the Robotics System Solutions (RSS) Team and the Edge AI Team.
ADI is not developing a complete humanoid robot. Our focus is the enabling technology inside the robotic system: tactile sensing, signal conditioning, joint and actuator electronics, motor control, embedded processing, connectivity, power management and the hardware/software interfaces.
This is not primarily a systems-integration or applications-layer position. We are looking for someone who has personally architected, designed, built, debugged and matured sophisticated robotic hardware. The right person will understand how individual components, integrated circuits, sensors and electronic subsystems influence the performance, reliability and manufacturability of the complete robotic arm, mobile base or dexterous hand.
Responsibilities will include the following:
• Work with the RFAS and RSS broader teams to match customer problem statements to ADI technology solutions, and provide technical guidance and influence.
• Work with the technology groups in ADI (vision, precision, sensing, motion, connectivity etc) to understand and position ADI technology differentiation for robotics systems.
• Support the creation and optimization of system architectures for robotics solutions.
• Expand ADI domain knowledge in the areas of humanoid, mobile, and outdoor robots and the trends in these areas.
• Translate system level require such as control latency, thermal and wiring constraints, grip slip detection, and joint responsiveness into subsystem and silicon requirements.
• Help to drive next generation product roadmaps for relevant products including connectivity, power, vision, digital and motor control.
• Support local sales and FAEs in deep technical discussions with robotics customers in the USA
Required Profile:
This role requires a technical leader with a strong background and capability in electronics and the intersection of IC-level hardware with overall system performance. Someone who excels in collaborative environments, and in technical thought leadership, not a traditional engineering manager. Existing domain expertise and hands-on development in robotics development and deployment is required, preferably with a robot OEM. The role is primarily one of thought leadership, technical expertise and influence.
Technical Foundation
• Bachelors in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with 10+ years of experience in an industrial/commercial robotics domain.
• Demonstrated experience taking sophisticated robotic subsystems from architecture through working hardware.
• Deep familiarity with humanoid, mobile robotics, collaborative robots architectures and subsystem electronics.
• Strong understanding of semiconductor-based system design, including analog and mixed-signal signal chains, data converters, embedded processors, power electronics or custom silicon.
• Hands-on experience with schematic design, printed circuit boards, board bring-up, laboratory instrumentation, debugging and design verification.
• Working knowledge of motors, encoders, motor-control electronics, position feedback and real-time control.
• Experience integrating tactile, force, torque, position, current, vision or other sensing into a closed-loop robotic system.
• Ability to work across electrical, mechanical, firmware, controls, artificial-intelligence and systems disciplines.
• Good communicator with a strong ability in technical presentation and collateral generation
Leadership in Matrix Organizations
• Excellence in influencing without direct authority (non-management role)
• Proven success in matrix organizations where outcomes depend on collaboration
• Ability to guide technical decisions through influence rather than direct control
• Track record of building consensus across diverse stakeholders
• Strong communication skills bridging technical and business audiences
Travel: 10% (primarily in USA)
