About Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, on a simple but radical idea: the critical minerals powering the energy transition already exist. They just need to come back. Today Redwood is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America — recovering, refining, and redeploying critical minerals from end-of-life batteries back into the supply chain. On the energy side, Redwood has deployed the largest second-life battery project in the world, delivering power to AI data centers in months rather than years using proprietary energy architecture engineered entirely in-house. The company is profitable, the market it operates in is projected to grow 20 to 50 times over the next decade, and Redwood is the only company with the supply chain, the technology, and the operational scale to lead it.
Position Summary:
The Senior Service Engineer, Energy Storage resolves complex technical issues across deployed battery energy storage systems (BESS). The role serves as the technical escalation path for the operations and maintenance organization, which handles routine monitoring, preventive maintenance, and first-line troubleshooting. The position independently owns deep diagnostics, system-level failure analysis, and engineering-driven corrective actions. It bridges field operations and engineering by translating operational issues into engineering solutions and feeding field learnings back into product and system design. This is a fully on-site role at 100 Hooper in San Francisco, with semi-regular travel to field sites.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Acts as the primary technical escalation point for the operations and maintenance organization for issues beyond standard operating procedures
• Defines handoff criteria, escalation thresholds, and response expectations between operations and maintenance and service engineering
• Owns investigation and resolution of complex electrical, controls, software, thermal, and system-integration issues
• Translates field and operations and maintenance feedback into actionable requirements for product, systems, and research and development engineering teams
• Drives improvements in system serviceability, reliability, and maintainability in collaboration with design, manufacturing, and quality engineering
• Owns advanced service documentation, including troubleshooting guides, decision trees, and service bulletins
• Develops technical training materials and supports operations and maintenance team upskilling on new systems, upgrades, and known issues
• Drives the development of custom service tooling to support and improve field operations
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline
• 4+ years of experience supporting complex electromechanical or power electronics systems such as BESS, renewable energy, or industrial systems
• Experience working safely on high-voltage AC and DC systems, including applicable electrical safety practices
• Working knowledge of BESS architecture, including batteries, inverters and power conversion, energy management, thermal management, and protection systems
• Experience working within a tiered support model between field operations, service engineering, and product engineering
• Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
